Football is a team sport played between two teams of 11 players each. At the beginning of the 21st century, it was played by over 250 million players in over 200 countries, making it the most popular sport in the world.
Football is played according to a set of rules, known as the Laws of the Game, as presented below:
Two teams with 11 players, each trying to hit a round ball (soccer ball) in order to enter it into the opponent's goal. The team that scores the most goals by the end of the game is declared the winner; if both teams have scored the same number of goals, the match is considered a draw. One of the first rules is to forbid the intentional touching of the ball by hand during the game (except for goalkeepers). The only time the players can use their hands is when they throw from the edge (execute an out). Otherwise, players can use any part of the body to direct the ball.
Players can approach the opponent's goal as follows: by dribbling (running with the ball at their feet); by passing the ball between teammates and by shooting it towards the goal. Opponents may recover the ball by intercepting a pass or dispossessing the ball. Physical contact is limited.
The game stops only when the ball leaves the entire circumference of a line marking the field (either on the ground or in the air) or when the referee whistles. The game resumes in different ways.
Usually, in a match played at a professional level, there are few goals. For example, in the English Premier League in the 2005–2006 season, they averaged 2.48 goals per game. In addition, 88% of the games ended with less than 4 goals scored. But only 8% of the games ended without a goal.
